Sorenson IP Relay™ (SIPRelay) is a free service that enables deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to place text-based relay calls from a mobile device or personal computer (PC) to any standard telephone user in the United States and its territories. A Sorenson Communications Assistant™ (CA) relays the conversation between the deaf and hard-of hearing individual and the standard telephone user.
How do you place a SIPRelay call?
Relay calls are placed over a wireless network or Internet connection through a mobile device or personal computer. The text relay user simply contacts a CA by entering the phone number of the hearing person that he or she wishes to call. The CA then contacts the hearing user via a standard phone line and relays the conversation between the two parties.
Please ensure your computer meets or exceeds the following system requirements:
Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Internet connection
Internet Explorer 5.0 or later
Java Virtual Machine (Java VM) environment installed
Please refer to your mobile device's user manual.
The following calls can not be placed:
International calls
Pay-per-call (900 or 976 numbers)
Although SIPRelay is an option for you to use in an emergency, you should keep a TTY available. During a power outage or Internet connection failure you would not be able to use your computer and SIPRelay to make a 911 emergency call. Your TTY should still work in those situations.
